Developing the next generation of community leaders
For nearly 30 years, Leadership Porterville has inspired, developed, and connected emerging and established leaders who want to make a meaningful impact in the Porterville community. This nine‑month program blends leadership training, community immersion, and hands‑on experience to prepare participants to lead with confidence, purpose, and vision.
Mission:
To enable potential and emerging community leaders to positively impact Porterville as informed, engaged, and confident residents. The program inspires active involvement through the skills, knowledge, and relationships gained during the nine‑month experience.

Elevated Leadership Presence
Participants finish the program with stronger confidence, clearer communication, and a refined leadership style developed through training, assessments, and real‑world practice.
Commitment to Community Engagement
Participants reflect on their civic involvement and graduate with a renewed commitment to contributing meaningfully to Porterville’s community initiatives.
Understanding of Local Issues & Opportunities
Through immersive sessions and government engagement, participants gain a well‑rounded understanding of the systems, challenges, and opportunities shaping Porterville.
Demonstrated Leadership Capability
By completing program requirements—including assessments and the community project—participants show readiness for future leadership roles and continued personal growth.
Expanded Professional Network
Participants build lasting connections with local leaders, officials, partners, and peers, creating a valuable network for collaboration and ongoing leadership development.


Here’s what you need to know
Who should Apply?
- Leaders of teams, new supervisors and project managers who lead people and projects.
- Staff who have been identified as outstanding prospects for increased leadership responsibilities.
- Mid-Managers who want to expand their hard and soft skills and refine their personal leadership style.
Participation
Successful applicants should show confidence, genuine interest in the Leadership Porterville program, and an understanding of its 9‑month commitment. They must demonstrate motivation, a history of volunteer service, awareness of local community issues, and strong leadership potential.
Participants build networks with local business and community leaders, attend evening sessions on topics like time management and conflict management, and complete reading assignments that support the curriculum.
Full participation is required. This includes attending orientation, the welcome reception, graduation, a one‑day retreat, the Sacramento session, monthly day and evening sessions, and specific government meetings. Members must also take part in the class community service project, assume leadership roles, and may be asked to attend additional community events. The goal is 100% attendance, and any absences must be approved and made up before the final session.
Sessions:
The Leadership Porterville Program may consist of one evening session and/or one or two full day sessions each month. Sessions are generally scheduled on the first and third Thursdays. Days are subject to change. In those instances, the class members will be notified of any schedule change as soon as possible.
