CITY OF PORTERVILLE ANNOUNCES PLANNING AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT TO STRENGTHEN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Porterville, CA - The City of Porterville will present a proposed organizational restructuring to the City Council next week that would consolidate the Community Development Department and Engineering Department into a new Planning and Engineering Department.

The proposed structure is intended to strengthen the City’s ability to support economic development, improve coordination across development services, and better position Porterville to respond to new investment and housing opportunities.

Under the proposal, planning and engineering functions would operate as a unified team responsible for development review, infrastructure planning, and project coordination. The updated structure is designed to guide projects more efficiently from concept through construction while maintaining the City’s planning and infrastructure standards.

The proposed reorganization supports the City Council’s long-standing emphasis on ensuring the City operates with a focus on results, efficiency, and delivering measurable value to the residents of Porterville.

Like many communities throughout the Central Valley, Porterville has experienced periods of slower economic growth compared to other regions of California. Staff believes the updated organizational structure will help the City respond more effectively to development opportunities and support responsible long-term growth.

“Porterville is open for business,” said Rich Tree, City Manager for the City of Porterville. “Strong communities require both opportunity and accountability. Our focus is on ensuring the City operates efficiently, uses taxpayer resources responsibly, and works collaboratively with builders, employers, and investors who want to bring projects to Porterville.”

City officials also believe the improved development process can help support additional housing construction throughout the community. Increasing the supply of housing can foster greater competition in the housing market and help improve long-term housing affordability for residents.

If approved by the City Council, the City intends to implement the new Planning and Engineering Department immediately following Council action.

This organizational change represents an important step in strengthening Porterville’s long-term economic development strategy and ensuring City Hall is structured to support the community’s future growth.

The City Council will consider the proposed reorganization at its upcoming public meeting next week. Additional information regarding the agenda item will be available on the City of Porterville’s website.
