Porterville, CA - The City of Porterville Parks & Leisure Services is gearing up for one of the community’s most anticipated annual events, Pioneer Days & Rib Cook-Off, benefiting the Zalud House Museum. Presented by OACYS Technology, this year’s event will take place Saturday, October 3, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM in Downtown Porterville.
Pioneer Days began following the City’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 2011 and has continued to grow into a favorite Porterville tradition. As part of the community’s America 250 celebrations, the 2026 Pioneer Days will bring even more history, entertainment and family-friendly activities to Downtown Porterville.
The event is free to attend and will offer something for the entire family. Centennial Park will be transformed into a step back in time with horse-drawn wagon rides, gold and gem panning, a cowboy encampment, an authentic 16-foot Native American teepee, tintype photography, live music by Nashville recording artist Nick Slater, Woody and Jessie meet and greets, Cowboy Story Time, pumpkin painting, the Pioneer Days Pageants and more.
Visitors can also explore the Pioneer Jail, see the Ford Model T Car Club of Kern County, visit with the U.S. Forest Service and Porterville Fire Department, and browse a variety of information booths, craft vendors and food vendors. The Sons of Confederate Veterans will also be participating. Rumor has it, visitors may even witness a live shootout on Main Street as the Jackass Mail Run rides into town to ward off unwanted guests.
Rib Cook-Off Benefits the Zalud House
One of the featured attractions and major fundraisers of Pioneer Days is the annual Rib Cook-Off. Nearly 20 teams will compete for $2,250 in cash prizes, along with the coveted People’s Choice and Best Decorated Booth awards.
Each team will fire up their grills and prepare ribs in their own style as they compete for their share of the prize money. Community members can stroll along Main Street, sample the different entries and cast their vote for their favorite.
Rib tasting tickets will go on sale at 11:00 AM at the Parks & Leisure Services booth in front of City Hall. Tickets are $3 each, while supplies last. One ticket is good for one rib.
The Rib Cook-Off is supported by the Fraternal Order of Eagles, with proceeds benefiting the protection and preservation of the Zalud House Museum.
Pioneer Days Pageants
The Pioneer Days Pageants are another important fundraiser for the Zalud House Museum. Contestants have been preparing and selling tickets for weeks as they compete for the titles of Pioneer Days Queen, Princess, Junior Miss and Little Miss.
Current and former title holders from throughout the Valley will serve as guest judges and evaluate contestants on personality, stage presence and western costume.
