Porterville, CA - On November 4, 2025, Calico Mermaid Quilt & Fabric Shop was recognized as a 2025 Outstanding Business by the Porterville City Council. Since opening in April 2011, Calico Mermaid has brought creativity, community, and connection to Downtown Porterville. Owners Georgia and Richard Goode turned their passion for quilting into a thriving small business that has become a cornerstone of downtown and a reflection of Porterville’s entrepreneurial spirit.
Located in one of Porterville’s historic buildings, Calico Mermaid carries on a legacy of community service and local pride. Under Georgia’s leadership, a lifelong Porterville resident and retired educator, the shop has become a warm, welcoming space where creativity flourishes and friendships grow. Her husband Richard, a proud Navy veteran, helps lead operations and community events, making Calico Mermaid a true family-run success story.
The shop employs local residents and draws visitors from across the state. Their annual quilting retreats at SCICON bring participants from as far as Washington State, generating tourism dollars for local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses.
Calico Mermaid’s generosity is stitched into everything they do. They partner with the Porterville Quilters’ Cradle Quilt Project to provide handmade quilts to children in need and support the community through high school internships, athletic sponsorships, and local events.
Recognized as a 2024 Shepreneurs of Porterville honoree, Georgia’s leadership continues to inspire others. Calico Mermaid truly embodies what makes Porterville special; small businesses with big hearts, rooted in creativity, history, and community spirit.
Congratulations to Calico Mermaid Quilt & Fabric Shop on this well-deserved recognition as a 2025 Outstanding Business Honoree!
