FLAG DAY CELEBRATION CONTINUES FOR THE 43rd YEAR IN PORTERVILLE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 11, 2024

The 43rd annual Flag Day Celebration will be taking place on Friday, June 14th, 2024, beginning at 7:00 PM at Grocery Outlet (50 West Olive Avenue). The annual recognition of national Flag Day has been a tradition in the Porterville community, marked by a ceremony with the lowering of the previous year’s American flag and the raising of a new flag on the large flag pole located at the Grocery Outlet shopping center off Olive Avenue. This tradition was started back in 1982 by the Smith family whose store, Smith’s Market, was the anchor of the retail center. Today the tradition is continued by the Flag Day Committee, which is comprised of community volunteers and service clubs, wanting to honor and keep this patriotic tradition going.

Over the years, the celebration has grown and become an important event for the community. To honor this year’s flag day celebration, with a “Let it Wave,” theme, there will be a special opening tribute by Skydive Elsinore (SDE), which has been operating since 1959 and has a training facility located in Porterville. SDE have been a part of the Veterans Day parade for the past two (2) years and it is an honor to have them join the community for the flag day celebration. These jumpers are all highly skilled and a sight to see as they land on the street before the start of the ceremony, and the City is thankful for their continued collaboration and support. This event has a rich history in the community and the City is honored to support this tradition.
